1.Brief Introduction of Major of Chemistry
Department of chemistry is a new institution of teaching and research established in 2016 through regulation of colleges and departments based on long-term development program of Harbin Institute of Technology. The origin is the science center of Academy of Fundamental and Interdisciplinary Science. Department of Chemistry has 29 faculty members, including 11 professors, 11 associate professors, and 12 doctoral supervisor. All faculty have doctoral degree and 95% of the members have long term overseas study experience. Four faculty were awarded with the 21st Century Talent Fund by the Ministry of Education and Professor Jianmin Sun have been included in the “Top 1% Highly Cited Chinese Authors” list of Royal Society of Chemistry.
2.Faculty and Research
The Department of Chemistry publishes more than 100 SCI cited papers currently, and in the past 5 years, 28 were granted by the Natural science Foundation of China. The research areas include Green Catalytic, Synthesis and Application of Porous Nanomaterial, Analysis and Application of Separation and Enrichment Materials, Organic Photochemical Synthesis and Asymmetric Catalytic, Molecular Recognition Technology and Supermolecule Self-assembly Constructed Functional Materials, Theoretical Calculation of Chemical Reaction, Photoelectric Material and Drug Design. In recent years, under the support of “211” and “985” projects, the Department of Chemistry is equipped with instrumentations valued 60 million RMB and the effective utilization and sharing of advanced equipments and facilities provide strong support for scientific research. The department of chemistry develops extensive academic communication and research cooperation with the United States, Japan, Germany, France, Canada, and so on. Dozens of researchers had joined in the academic cooperation and communications with developed countries and areas.
3.Features of Education
The Department of Chemistry faces the international frontier and interdisciplinary science research areas, and the requirement of national construction. The educations of emphasize on both knowledge and psychology and the undergraduate students are well trained with critical and creative thinking, and good experimental skills; and have good potential abilities for the M. S. and Ph. D. programs. The aim of our education is to train the excellent researchers with knowledge, research ability, competitive power, and comprehensive qualities.

The students graduated from the Department of Chemistry are popular in universities at home and aboard since having the grounding knowledge and excellent experiment operation ability. Most of the bachelors continue to pursuing the master or doctor degrees at home or abroad. The graduates could engage in scientific research and teaching in institutes and colleges, or work on technical development and management in enterprises such as CNPC, Sinopec Group, Dow Chemical Company, Unilever, CASC, government agency, and institutional organization.
