From July 19 to 24, 2026, under the guidance of the Graduate School of Harbin Institute of Technology, the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering successfully held the “Chemistry Empowers Life and Health” International Graduate Summer School. Focusing on the interdisciplinary fields of chemistry, biology and medical engineering, the summer school enrolled a total of 57 students (including 12 international graduate students), attracting outstanding graduate students from Japan, South Korea, Russia, Pakistan and China to gather at HIT. Through a combination of frontier lectures, academic reports and innovative experiments, participants explored the forefront of disciplines and deepened academic exchanges.
On the morning of July 20, the summer school officially opened. The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Han Xiaojun, Chair of the Department of Chemistry. Professor Sun Zhiqiang, Deputy Director of the Graduate Training Division of HIT Graduate School, and Professor Qi Dianpeng, Assistant to the Dean of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, delivered speeches respectively. The two teachers expressed sincere thanks to well-known experts from South Korea, Denmark, Japan and China, and extended a warm welcome to all participants from home and abroad. They encouraged everyone to seize this learning opportunity to conduct in-depth exchanges, learn from each other, and broaden their international research horizons.

The summer school featured a diverse faculty team, including 2 South Korean experts, 1 Danish expert, 5 Japanese experts and 5 domestic experts, delivering a total of 16 thematic lectures. Meanwhile, graduate students from various universities gave 10 thematic reports, showcasing the academic vitality of young researchers. From July 22 to 23, the summer school launched innovative experimental courses. Students entered laboratories in groups, operated precision instruments independently and completed the whole research process, and got first hand experience of the unique strengths brought by cross disciplinary integration of chemistry, life sciences and medicine .
Experts deliver cutting-edge thematic lectures
On the afternoon of July 24, the closing ceremony of the summer school was held at Room C415, Mingde Building. Student representatives shared their learning gains and insights over the week, stating that face-to-face communication with top scholars at home and abroad and personal participation in interdisciplinary innovative experiments had not only consolidated their professional theoretical foundation, but also greatly broadened their international research horizons. At the closing ceremony, the organizer presented honorary certificates to outstanding participants, and called on young researchers to continue to cultivate the frontier field of chemistry empowering life and health, and contribute to the development of global health with scientific research strength.

The successful running of this International Graduate Summer School fully demonstrated the profound educational heritage of HIT’s chemistry discipline and its scientific research strength in interdisciplinary fields such as artificial cells and biomaterials. It marks a key initiative of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering to advance the international cultivation of graduate students and promote high-level opening-up.
